US Issues Updated Travel Advisory for Belgium Citing Crime, Terrorism, and Civil Unrest Concerns

    August 6, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – U.S. State Department has revised its travel alert for Belgium, advising Americans to be more cautious due to ongoing issues related to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The notice, published on July 23, maintains Belgium at Level 2 within the department’s four-tier system. Authorities have expanded the list of risks to include crime and unrest and have updated the summary of potential hazards. This update does not instruct travelers to avoid visiting Belgium. Level 2 recommends that visitors exercise increased vigilance and consult official safety advisories before traveling.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

The advisory highlights that petty crimes are frequently encountered in popular tourist districts. Many incidents involve purse snatching and pickpocketing targeting foreign tourists. The State Department also issues warnings about robberies, theft of electronics, and theft from parked vehicles. Key locations such as major cities, restaurants, train stations, buses, trams, and the Brussels metro at night are identified as areas requiring caution. Travelers are advised to keep valuables secure, carry minimal cash and IDs, and stay alert in crowded environments to avoid becoming targets.

Particularly, there has been an increase in bag thefts on trains, especially along the route between Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves often target lightweight bags stored overhead. The advisory recommends that travelers keep cash, passports, and valuables close at hand. Drivers are advised to lock vehicle doors, close windows, and avoid leaving belongings visible inside parked cars. Belgian Federal Police note that thieves frequently operate in teams, using crowding, bumps, or staged distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Increased Focus on Crime and Transportation-Related Risks

The section on terrorism states that violent attacks and related threats continue to pose a danger in Belgium. Public events, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, schools, parks, shopping zones, and transportation hubs are identified as potential targets. The guidance emphasizes that terrorists and their supporters might aim at U.S. citizens abroad. Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis currently lists the national threat level as Level 3, which it considers serious. On the department’s four-point scale, a Level 3 threat is deemed both possible and probable.

The updated advisory also emphasizes the potential for demonstrations and strikes. While most large gatherings are peaceful, they can cause disruptions to transport services and essential infrastructure. The State Department explains that protests may be held over political or economic issues, during major holidays, or large public events. Authorities routinely monitor such demonstrations, and travelers are advised to avoid large crowds. It is recommended that visitors stay informed through local updates, pay attention to traffic notices, and modify travel plans if public transportation is delayed or shut down.

Preparations and Vigilance Recommended for Travelers in Belgium

U.S. officials suggest enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, prior to or during visits. This service provides alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and facilitates contact during emergencies. Americans should also familiarize themselves with Belgium’s entry requirements, local laws, and health advice. U.S. tourists can stay in Belgium for up to 90 days without a visa, provided their passports are valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure from the Schengen zone.

The guidance urges travelers to remain vigilant in tourist hotspots and around banks or ATMs. It also recommends staying updated on local conditions and knowing how to reach emergency services. Belgium uses 112 for life-threatening emergencies across Europe and 101 for local police assistance. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular services to American citizens. The July update kept the advisory level unchanged, but added warnings about crime and unrest for travelers visiting Belgium.
