European Union Allocates €2.3 Million to Enhance Cholera Control Efforts in Africa Amid Rising Cases

    August 18, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to combat cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This support aims to assist Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials stated that the funds will be used for treatment initiatives, disease surveillance, access to clean water, and sanitation improvements. The announcement follows a surge in cholera cases across several African nations in 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a significant spike mostly centered in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive €1.5 million, making up the largest portion of the emergency aid package. The funds will help expand intervention teams and supply cholera treatment kits along with other vital resources. Additionally, the support will facilitate the treatment of public water sources and household water supplies. Part of the funding will be allocated to bolster disease surveillance in remote and hard-to-reach areas. The program also emphasizes case management, risk communication, and community awareness as health teams work to contain the spread within affected communities.

Recent World Health Organization data indicate 90,049 confirmed cholera cases in 18 countries within the African Region up to June 28. These cases included 1,528 reported deaths. Nigeria reported 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities during the same period. In June alone, Nigeria documented 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO has noted that Borno State accounted for over 95% of Nigeria’s reported cholera cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno being among the most affected areas.

Funds Focused on Treatment, Water Access, and Disease Surveillance

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 to support case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives. This funding will also enhance disease surveillance, improve case detection, and promote community engagement. It will assist in conducting safe and dignified burials during the outbreak response where needed. WHO data show that the country has reported 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths through June 28. The European Commission explained that this assistance is part of its broader emergency humanitarian effort addressing the outbreaks in these four nations.

Cameroon is allocated €100,000 to strengthen outbreak containment and patient care in affected villages. The support will fund additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. As of June 28, WHO reported 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon. Chad will benefit from €200,000 for water, sanitation, and hygiene activities. The funds will also aid community surveillance and case management. Chad’s outbreak data show 109 cases and three fatalities during the same period.

Nigeria’s Outbreak Surge Contributing to Regional Case Growth

WHO reported that the African Region experienced 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries in June, marking a 95% increase from May. The region also reported 284 cholera-related deaths during the same month. Nigeria recorded the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributed the rise in Nigeria primarily to the surge in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and increased rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease caused by ingesting contaminated food or water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Critical cases can cause rapid dehydration and require immediate treatment. The EU’s funding aims to support measures that break the chain of transmission and improve access to healthcare in the affected areas. The total aid package for all four countries amounts to €2.3 million. It emphasizes strengthening treatment facilities, surveillance, vaccination where suitable, safe water access, sanitation, and direct community outreach as part of ongoing outbreak management.
