First Fatality of Endangered Australian Sea Lion Due to Bird Flu on Kangaroo Island

    September 14, 2026

ADELAIDE / RankWire.AI / – South Australian authorities responsible for environmental management have confirmed the initial death of an endangered Australian sea lion caused by H5N1 avian influenza. The carcass was found by a park ranger at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island. This location hosts the third-largest single colony of the species, which makes up about five percent of the overall population. The occurrence of bird flu leading to the death of an Australian sea lion on Kangaroo Island follows increased surveillance efforts by wildlife officials across key pinniped breeding zones.

Official briefings from the South Australia Department for Environment and Water revealed that laboratory tests showed a strong positive for H5 avian influenza. Environment Minister Emily Bourke explained that although the sea lion was recovering from a shark wound sustained three months prior, post-mortem diagnostics identified the viral infection as the main cause of death. She added that the animal’s weakened immune state during its recovery likely heightened its susceptibility to the virus.

This loss raises serious conservation concerns for the species, which is endemic to Australia. The population is estimated at between 10,000 and 12,000 individuals globally. Around 80 percent of these remaining animals are located in South Australia. Coastal colonies in this region were already experiencing an annual baseline decline of roughly two percent before the virus’s emergence.

Bird Flu Causes First Endangered Australian Sea Lion Death on Kangaroo Island’s Coastline

Following the confirmed case, wildlife managers in the state launched protective measures at Seal Bay. Over 400 sea lion pups received hookworm treatments aimed at strengthening their immune systems. Additionally, hundreds of feral cats were trapped to prevent potential disease transmission around the colony. As the situation unfolded, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is working with environmental authorities to consider participating in international trials for experimental mammalian vaccines, in response to the outbreak.

This case signifies a broader expansion of the H5N1 strain within Australian marine mammals, following a confirmed incident involving a long-nosed fur seal at Beachport on the Limestone Coast. Researchers from Charles Darwin University previously issued warnings about possible mortality events among local seal populations, drawing comparisons with mass die-offs documented in South America and the sub-Antarctic regions.

Marine Wildlife Teams Enforce Biosecurity Protocols at Coastal Reserves

South Australia has reported over 290 confirmed cases of H5 avian influenza affecting wild birds and marine mammals. This accounts for more than half of the total cases documented across the country. Authorities have assured that no additional sea lion fatalities have been observed at Seal Bay, but rangers remain vigilant.

Monitoring efforts by state and federal wildlife agencies are ongoing across island sanctuaries and on mainland haul-out sites. Data related to biosecurity measures, mortality statistics, and disease control guidelines continue to be accessible through official government environmental portals. These actions are part of ongoing efforts to safeguard vulnerable marine species from the spread of the virus.
