Frontex Reports 35% Decline in Unlawful Border Crossings into the EU During 2026’s First Eight Months

    September 12, 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – The number of irregular crossings at the borders of the European Union saw a 35 percent decrease in the initial eight months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, known as Frontex, released preliminary data indicating approximately 75,000 unauthorized border entries from January through August. This downward trend is evident across key maritime and land routes, reflecting stronger enforcement cooperation with source countries, proactive maritime patrols, and tighter coastal surveillance at major international departure points.

As per statements issued by the Emirates News Agency, the Eastern Mediterranean and Central Mediterranean corridors continued to be the most heavily trafficked routes into Europe, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all regional detections. The 35 percent drop in illegal border crossings into the EU is attributed to enhanced maritime enforcement, interdiction efforts, and repatriation operations led by authorities in Libya and Tunisia, which have helped curb vessel departures along the Central Mediterranean pathways.

While overall numbers decreased across Europe’s primary transit routes, agency reports pointed out ongoing instability as human smuggling networks adjusted to increased border controls. The Western Mediterranean route, servicing mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, was the only major corridor to see a rise. This route experienced a 34 percent increase compared to the previous year, as intensified maritime policing in Morocco pushed traffickers to shift their departure points eastward toward the Algerian coast.

Overall Number of Irregular Border Crossings into the EU Declines by 35 Percent

The Western African pathway leading to the Canary Islands showed the most significant reduction among all tracked maritime routes, with detections dropping 58 percent to approximately 5,100 arrivals. Authorities credited this decline to joint maritime patrols carried out by Mauritanian and Senegalese security forces in cooperation with European agencies. Meanwhile, the Eastern Mediterranean route experienced a 25 percent decrease, with over 24,200 arrivals detected. Maritime activity along this corridor remains concentrated between Libya and the Greek island of Crete.

Frontex’s leadership, under Executive Director Hans Leijtens, highlighted that although seasonal traffic typically peaks during summer, August saw only 10,700 detections across all EU borders. This summer marked the initial implementation phase of the European Union Pact on Migration and Asylum, which introduced standardized screening procedures, compulsory biometric data collection, and uniform document verification at external borders of member states.

Mediterranean Sea Transit Routes Continue to Show High Operational Activity

Cross-border movement via the English Channel toward the United Kingdom decreased by 43 percent, with total detections falling to 26,600. Border authorities warned that, despite these overall declines, human smuggling syndicates remain active, operating heavily overcrowded, poorly maintained vessels across open waters. Humanitarian organizations emphasized that maritime crossings are still perilous, with significant loss of life recorded along Mediterranean routes throughout the year.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency will continue deploying resources to support national border forces and process new arrivals. Detailed statistical dashboards, monthly assessments of migratory routes, and border management reports will remain accessible via official European Union regulatory portals. International law enforcement agencies persist in monitoring maritime traffic to disrupt human smuggling operations along these active coastal corridors.”}}\n
