Spain’s August Heat-Related Death Toll Approaches 2,150 Amid Persistent European Heatwaves

    September 3, 2026

MADRID / RankWire.AI / – According to official daily mortality surveillance data released by the Carlos III Health Institute, nearly 2,150 individuals in Spain lost their lives due to heat-related causes in August. The MoMo monitoring system officially recorded 2,149 excess deaths linked to extreme temperatures throughout the month. This figure ranks as the second-highest August total recorded since the start of national data collection in 2015. As consecutive European heatwaves persist, seasonal mortality metrics across the Iberian Peninsula continue to reach historic highs, with Spain experiencing close to 2,150 heat-related deaths in August.

Public health researchers analyze daily mortality monitoring statistics on office computers.

The only August figure higher was the record 2,184 heat-related deaths registered in August 2025. Public health records indicate that between May 15 and August 31, a total of 5,234 people died due to thermal stress. This represents the highest summer mortality total ever documented by the national public health institute since implementing its tracking system. It surpasses the previous summer peak of 4,652 deaths recorded in 2022. As the death toll approaches 2,150 for August, health authorities are examining the systemic strain placed on regional emergency response systems.

Data provided by the Ministry of Health reveals that elderly populations were most vulnerable during the heatwaves. Of the 2,149 victims in August, 2,064 were over 65 years old. Among them, 1,285 were over 85. Gender-wise, 1,283 of the deceased were women, while 866 were men. Medical experts have pointed out that sustained high ambient temperatures worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions among vulnerable groups.

Regionally, Catalonia in the northeast reported the highest concentration of heat-related fatalities, with 1,164 deaths in August. The Valencia region followed with 227 deaths, and Andalusia recorded 138 heat-associated fatalities. Local public health agencies in these areas increased community outreach efforts and expanded access to cooling centers. However, extreme nighttime temperatures have continued to impede recovery among affected residents.

The Spain State Meteorological Agency AEMET has issued updates showing that thermal risks remain high into early autumn. Forecasters confirmed that an unusual hot spell for September has affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures significantly above seasonal averages. Climate experts emphasize that across Europe, heat episodes are becoming more frequent, intense, and prolonged, aligning with broader environmental warming trends.

Catalonia Reports Over a Thousand Heat-Related Deaths in August

The federal health authorities continue to work closely with local governments to strengthen preventative care and monitor high-risk patient registries. Emergency medical services have revised operational protocols to respond swiftly to heat-related health issues. National public health advisories remain in effect, urging citizens to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated amid ongoing unseasonable atmospheric conditions.

Once September surveillance data is finalized, government agencies plan to produce a comprehensive review of post-summer mortality figures. Public health specialists underscore the need for long-term infrastructure adaptations, such as urban planning and improved public housing insulation, to better shield vulnerable populations from recurring extreme heat events. The final mortality data will be accessible through official ministry portals to guide future health policy decisions.
