UN Calls for Accelerated Global Response as Ebola Spreads Rapidly in DRC

    September 2, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian leader Tom Fletcher has urged swift international intervention as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to grow across six provinces. Fletcher emphasized to UN member states that the outbreak is progressing at a pace faster than previous Ebola crises. He called on governments and donors to boost funding and improve access to humanitarian aid. This plea comes amid rising infection numbers, ongoing insecurity, and intense pressure on medical facilities in the eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

According to World Health Organization data released on September 1, the outbreak has surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. The epidemic currently spans 60 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever and the fastest to develop. Since the outbreak began, Ituri remains the primary transmission hub, accounting for most cases.

The disease involves the Bundibugyo Ebola virus species and was first identified in May 2026. WHO has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the organization reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with totals crossing 6,000 shortly thereafter. By that date, 1,293 recoveries had been documented. Health officials continue active surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, clinical management, and community engagement efforts in the affected areas.

Conflict and Fragile Health Systems Hamper Ebola Response

The Ebola crisis unfolds amidst a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher highlighted that nearly 11 million people require aid due to conflict, displacement, food shortages, and malnutrition. Violence in parts of eastern DRC has restricted access for health and aid workers. The United Nations has increased its efforts since activating an emergency response mechanism on June 9. Additionally, operational humanitarian hubs have been established in Bunia and Beni to facilitate on-the-ground activities.

Frontline healthcare workers face considerable dangers during this ongoing response. Fletcher noted that more than 40 healthcare workers have lost their lives to Ebola. Healthcare facilities and ambulances have also been targeted with attacks. WHO data as of July 30 indicated 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers, including 44 fatalities. Efforts are now focused on infection prevention, safe clinical practices, and enhanced protections for responders. WHO has also pointed out that untracked transmission chains and deaths outside treatment centers continue to hinder containment efforts.

Funding Shortages and Vaccine Research Push Forward as Cases Surge

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo allocates $2.1 billion, with $300 million dedicated to Ebola response activities. Fletcher called for increased and adaptable international funding to support both the outbreak control and the broader humanitarian efforts. WHO has also stated that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion. The organization has appealed to member states to accelerate their contributions as efforts expand to enhance surveillance, treatment, laboratory testing, community outreach, and other public health initiatives.

On September 1, WHO released revised vaccine guidance while researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency indicated that current evidence does not confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine provides significant protection against this Ebola species in humans. It recommended administering the vaccine solely within research protocols until further clinical trial data are available. WHO and Africa CDC are supporting the Congolese government’s response efforts. Meanwhile, health authorities are actively working to identify cases, break transmission chains, and safeguard communities across the six affected provinces.
