Austria Prepares to Launch Its First Military Satellite, BEACONSAT, by 2027

    August 24, 2026

VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of preparing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite, and the largest spacecraft developed domestically to date. This satellite aims to detect and assess disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. The Austrian government plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project’s goal is to identify jamming and spoofing signals from orbit while collecting data on when and where navigation systems are compromised.

Austria readies BEACONSAT military satellite for 2027 launch
Austria’s BEACONSAT project centers on detecting GNSS interference from orbit.

BEACONSAT is designed as a technology demonstrator within a multi-year research and development initiative. Jamming refers to radio interference that obstructs or diminishes satellite navigation signals, while spoofing involves transmitting false navigation data that can mislead receivers about their true position. Satellite navigation is vital for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and other critical systems. Austria’s Defence Ministry anticipates that the mission will generate valuable data to enhance operational procedures and deepen understanding of GNSS interference.

GATE Space, a satellite technology firm based in Schwechat, is responsible for leading the BEACONSAT project. The company holds overall accountability for the mission. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, GATE Space supplies the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management systems. The company has successfully conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.

Core Technology for the Satellite Mission Comes from Austrian Innovators

Several European firms contribute essential components to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN provides advanced technology designed to detect and analyze GNSS interference with high precision. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite hardware, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice, providing approximately 750,000 euros in funding.

The European Space Agency is backing and co-financing the initiative through its ESA Marketplace program, which supports technology demonstrations. This program enables commercially available space technologies to be tested for security-related applications. Austrian officials emphasize that BEACONSAT functions as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite program. Its primary purpose is to collect data on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit. The insights gathered will inform Austria’s Defence Ministry as it develops its military space capabilities.

BEACONSAT is Part of Austria’s Expanding Space Strategy

The Austrian Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit. This division will oversee satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance activities. BEACONSAT is a component of this emerging organizational structure, with a specific focus on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions expanding Austria’s role from merely utilizing space services to operating its own space infrastructure and systems. This strategy was adopted in 2023, with plans extending into 2035 and beyond.

The targeted launch date for BEACONSAT remains February 2027, with a Falcon 9 scheduled to deliver the satellite into orbit. Once deployed, the satellite will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research mission. The project involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology firms. It will mark Austria’s first military satellite mission while testing domestically produced systems designed to monitor disruptions affecting GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
