Belgium Reports 8.2% of Deaths in 2022 Were Linked to Obesity, New Data Shows

    August 8, 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – In an important public health report, Belgian research institute Sciensano disclosed that a high body mass index was connected to 9,509 fatalities in 2022. These deaths represent 8.2 percent of all mortality in Belgium for that year. This results in an average of more than one death per hour related to weight-related health issues. Researchers, for the first time, measured population-wide BMI mortality, finding that obesity-related health problems caused over 150,000 total years of life lost.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

The detailed epidemiological study analyzed the main causes of death to understand how elevated body mass index influences chronic illnesses. Results showed that cardiovascular problems were the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, were the second most common, linked to 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular conditions contributed to 1,171 deaths, with chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers also playing significant roles.

The demographic analysis reveals that the risk of death associated with excess weight increases notably with age. The highest mortality rates linked to overweight individuals were among those aged 65 and older. Gender comparison showed that men generally had higher mortality rates than women across most age groups. However, women aged 85 and above experienced higher total death counts, a pattern attributed to their longer average lifespan, according to epidemiologists.

Weight-Related Deaths in Belgium Are Primarily Driven by Heart and Circulatory Issues

Regional analysis across Belgium revealed notable differences in death rates connected to obesity. The southern region of Wallonia had the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders showed the lowest impact, recording 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Public health experts attribute these regional disparities to socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, and healthcare accessibility across the federation.

This data release coincides with policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health strategies. Officials are using the findings to evaluate the long-term economic impacts of chronic non-communicable diseases on Belgium’s healthcare system. The research employed a comparative risk assessment approach, calculating the population attributable fraction for each illness to establish baseline estimates for future prevention efforts.

Dementia and Alzheimer Disease Account for Over Sixteen Hundred Deaths

On a European scale, health organizations such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional policies. The Belgian findings align with broader European Union health objectives aimed at reducing early mortality from non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization continues to recommend integrated, multi-sector strategies to combat metabolic risk factors, emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention.

These results provide an evidence-based foundation for health authorities working to lower the prevalence of high body mass index across Western Europe. Quantifying both death tolls and years of life lost allows policymakers to focus on screening programs, targeted interventions, and lifestyle education initiatives. As regional authorities review the data, national health plans are likely to prioritize early preventative measures to reduce chronic disease burdens nationwide.
