Nearly 260,000 People Displaced by Wildfires Near Bordeaux and Madrid Tourist Areas

    July 27, 2026

Bordeaux, France / EuroWire / – Extensive wildfires burning across southwestern France and the Iberian Peninsula have led to the evacuation of around 260,000 residents and visitors from key tourist hotspots. Driven by consecutive heatwaves, arid landscapes, and unpredictable wind changes, these fires have swept through coastal zones near Bordeaux as well as rural regions west of Madrid. Emergency agencies in both France and Spain issued alert levels as thick smoke clouds disrupted major regional transport links, forcing the closure of several resort centers. Local authorities confirmed that prolonged high temperatures created extreme fire conditions, leading to widespread evacuation orders to protect public safety.

In France, authorities mandated mass evacuations in the Gironde department after flames threatened popular holiday areas along the Atlantic coast. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that approximately 200,000 individuals were moved into temporary shelters, calling it likely the largest peacetime civilian evacuation in France’s history. The French government dispatched 1,500 military personnel from the French Armed Forces to assist local emergency teams. Additionally, military aviation units deployed an Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft equipped with specialized water-dropping equipment to fight fires in remote forested zones.

Regional officials in southwestern France ordered the gradual evacuation of the entire Cap Ferret peninsula as fires consumed thousands of hectares of coastal pine forests. The Prefecture of Gironde confirmed that emergency responders established temporary reception centers inside exhibition halls in Bordeaux to host arriving families. Local authorities provided medical care, temporary accommodation, and masks to protect residents from the heavy smoke drifting from the fire zones. Firefighting teams noted that overstretched regional crews received reinforcements from the Paris Fire Brigade, along with aerial firefighting units supplied by European partner countries.

Across the border in Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited fire-affected areas west of Madrid where several blazes combined into a single large wildfire. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that over 60,000 residents and tourists were evacuated from towns within the Madrid region. Specialized units from the Military Emergencies Unit were deployed by Spanish emergency agencies to establish defensive perimeters around at-risk communities. In eastern Spain, local authorities reported a fatality near Valencia following a wildfire that spread through rural farmland, leading to additional evacuations in the area.

Military Support and Aerial Firefighting Resources Mobilized

International aid efforts ramped up through the European Civil Protection Mechanism as both countries sought specialized aerial firefighting assistance. Firefighting aircraft from Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands arrived to carry out water drops over high-risk zones in Spain. Meanwhile, France received heavy-lift helicopters and aircraft support from Croatia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, the total area burned across European Union member states reached unprecedented levels during this summer season.

The widespread wildfires have displaced nearly 260,000 individuals near popular tourist sites in France and Spain during the peak summer travel period in the northern hemisphere. These events have also disrupted regional rail and road traffic. Travel advisories issued by foreign diplomatic offices recommend that travelers in France and Spain stay updated via local news and follow safety directives issued by authorities. Regional tourism organizations reported numerous cancellations at coastal resorts as officials restricted access to forest parks and mountain trails. Emergency teams continue establishing secondary containment lines while monitoring weather updates for potential wind shifts.

Heavy Transport Aircraft Support Water Drop Operations

Emergency management agencies in both nations maintained 24/7 surveillance as firefighting crews worked to safeguard critical infrastructure and residential areas. Health departments in major cities like Madrid and Bordeaux issued air quality warnings, advising vulnerable populations to stay indoors with windows closed because of heavy atmospheric ash. Municipal logistics teams are distributing emergency supplies, clean drinking water, and hygiene kits to those displaced in temporary shelters. Authorities reiterated that containment efforts will persist across all fire sectors until weather conditions stabilize and fire perimeters are fully secured.
