A global consortium of climate researchers determined that unprecedented heat levels are the main factor driving these conditions, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits. European countries are experiencing critically low river levels, widespread water usage restrictions, and devastating wildfires following a historic June heatwave. Data shows that an increase in global temperatures significantly speeds up moisture evaporation from land and water sources, resulting in a highly unstable and arid environment. The study, published by the World Weather Attribution group, details how rising temperatures actively diminish natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily a consequence of reduced rainfall but of a warmer atmosphere causing greater moisture deficits on land. This dynamic indicates that drought risk will continue to grow even where rainfall patterns remain relatively stable. Scientists explain that a warmer atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor for each one-degree Celsius increase in temperature. This increased capacity directly leads to more intense evaporation from soil and vegetation across the landscape.
Using extensive weather data and advanced computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate to a hypothetical scenario that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their results show that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a climate without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, such soil moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The analysis also revealed that the exceptionally high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe was about 80 times more likely. This means that rainfall deficits which previously would not have caused severe drought now result in much drier soils, amplifying the risk.
